Our Restoration Approach

Vintage furniture should look cared for—not stripped of the character that made it worth preserving.

At Kept Modern, every piece is evaluated individually. Some pieces need only careful cleaning and minor repairs, while others benefit from more involved restoration. Our approach depends on the materials, construction, condition, and history of the piece.

Preservation First

Whenever possible, we preserve original finishes, materials, hardware, labels, and signs of craftsmanship. Natural variations and age-appropriate wear are part of a vintage piece’s story and are not automatically treated as flaws to erase.

Thoughtful Restoration

When restoration is appropriate, the goal is to improve the piece’s appearance, stability, and usefulness while respecting its original design. Work may include cleaning, structural repairs, finish correction, refinishing, hardware restoration, or upholstery, depending on what the piece requires.

We avoid making vintage furniture look newly manufactured. A restored piece may retain minor marks, color variations, or other evidence of its age.

Honest Condition

Each listing explains the known condition of the piece and identifies significant restoration or repairs whenever applicable. Photographs are considered part of the condition description, and noticeable imperfections are documented as clearly as possible.

Because every vintage item has lived a different life, condition will vary from piece to piece. Additional photographs, measurements, and details are always available before purchase.
